The tribes, mostly the nomadic communities who were engaged in criminal ventures for livelihood were termed as the criminal tribes. The British government passed Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 to set up their dominance over and to make settle at one place rather than being itinerant community and by 1911, Act was also proclaimed in Madras presidency. Later on criminal tribes settlements were instituted in various parts of British provinces. In Madras around eight settlements were established out which four settlements were endowed with Salvation Army. This paper gives an insight about the reclamation of criminal tribes through Salvation Army.
