Coverage of Sports in Mizoram Dailies

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the uncharted area of research in Mizoram, i.e. the relationship between sports and the media, also the role played by the public in the sports news coverage by the local Mizo dailies. The Mizo local dailies selection is done by purposive sampling technique; the reason behind this is the three selected Mizo local dailies are the newspapers with the most subscription and number of copies printed. Media is often called the fourth estate in a democratic country like India; the other three being the executive, legislature, and judiciary. Media often shapes public opinion and also the public often decides what the media covers and publishes. The paper gives special focuses on the coverage of sports news and in particular football news coverage. Emphasise is also given to the coverage of women's sports news and the space and frequency of news given to them.
