Abstract

Execution of land-grants to yajmani brahmanas on a large scale by kings and feudal lords to support  their livelihood following decline in trade and gradual desertion of towns from about fourth centuries A.D.  appears to be a great landmark in socio-economic history of  early India. Rent free land-grants and agrahara villages emerged as a later development from about fifth century onwards which reveals the sad picture of the monarchical and feudal administration and at the same time brings about the consolidation of socio-economic condition of the brahmanas in growing rural economy.
