Abstract

The idea of globalisation has sprouted since the age of exploration (15th - 17th AD) in the
world. The imprints of globalisation reached India as a whole package after the birth of various
invasions by the Arabs and Europeans. The footprints of globalisation have been strengthened
since the 19th century in India, due to various trade relations. The influence of mainstream
community and foreign invaders have left traces of globalisation over the indigenous tribal
communities in the country. This change has reflected in the transformation of ancestral practices
among the community members as a whole. The Kurumbas of Nilgiris also possess various unique
traditional practices which are endemic to them. Their artforms and practices swirl around the
ideas of nature and god. This study mainly concentrates on the impact of globalisation upon the
art forms and traditions of Kurumba tribes in the Nilgiris district and their evolution in the present
society.
