Abstract

“All men are born free and equal in dignity and rightsâ€

The women held a sacred position in context of religion in India. Since Vedas, The women have been worshipped as deity and it has been proved from numerous excavations, where it was found that people worshipped women idols in different eras. Women have multiple roles such as a member of a household, as producer of goods and services, as a reproducer of a new generation and as consumers.

India holds a sad picture of women status in India. The society has to change the way it looks at women and the way it treats women in our country. Government has to take a strict action against various forms of women issues in India.

A number of laws were enacted both in the pre-independence and post-independence periods to raise the position of women in India. The reforms in personal laws governing marriage and inheritance, labour laws ensuring human conditions of work, maternity benefits and welfare of workers, and social laws seeking protection to women against immoral traffic and exploitation tried to remove the disabilities that contributed to subordinate status of women in the Indian society.
