The Problems and Challenges faced by Women Media Practitioners in Mizoram

Abstract

Pursuing a career in media for woman in Mizoram is quite challenging and less encouragement has been given; despite Mizoram has the highest share of women in the workforce in India, according to the latest data released by the Union ministry of labour and employment, women of Mizoram constitute about 59% of the state’s workforce, man are mostly involve in media sector. Especially in journalism only a very few women are involve. Woman media practitioners may not face challenges and problems as much as others in different parts of the states because Mizoram is one of the most peaceful states in the country. But some Mizo females also faced problems while working in their professional environment. Recenlty, two Mizo female journalists working for the most renowned national channel News 18 and AIR was brutally beaten up by Assam police while out on an assignment to cover the protest by students on the Assam-Mizoram border. So it is important to study and find out the challenges and problems face by female media practitioners of Mizoram in their professional environment. The study has taken in-depth interview from female media practitioners working in Aizawl.
