Abstract

The portrayal of gender in media content, including animated films, has been a subject
of extensive discussion and debate. This paper presents a quantitative content analysis of gender
portrayal in Pixar Theatrical Shorts, exploring how gender stereotypes are perpetuated or
challenged in these films. The study aims to contribute to the existing literature on gender
portrayal in media and shed light on the potential impact on individuals' attitudes and beliefs,
considering the global reach and influence of Pixar films on children's development and
socialization.

The content analysis reveals a significant gender imbalance in Pixar Theatrical Shorts,
with male characters being over-portrayed and central to the narrative, while female characters
are often marginalized. This gender disparity is further emphasized by examining the screen
time of male and female characters, with male characters receiving significantly more screen
time than their female counterparts.

The findings underscore the need for more diverse and empowering representations of
gender in media, particularly in children's media, where stereotypes can shape attitudes and
values. Promoting more inclusive and equitable portrayals of gender in media can contribute to
fostering a more just and fair society. The study highlights the importance of using content
analysis as a valuable tool for critiquing and analyzing media representations and promoting
critical thinking about gender roles, and relationships in animated films. Ultimately, it calls for
greater awareness and responsibility in crafting gender portrayals in media to create a positive
impact on society.
