Abstract

Jallikattu is an ancient sport that dates to the Sangam Age. C.S. Chellappa’s novella Vaadivaasal: Arena narrates the happenings of the jallikattu in Periayapatti village. It is a tussle between the protagonist Picchi and the ‘demonic bull’ Kaari. The novella presents the cultural aspects of the Tamil society which is deep rooted in their historical legacy. The paper attempts to portray the role of tradition and culture in the life of Tamil people and how they strive to preserve it.
