Korean Serial and its influence on Mizo Women

Mizoram was formed as the Federal State of India on 20 February 1987. Soon after the Independence, there has been tremendous social and cultural change after the Britishers left to form its own governance. The living standard of the people grows exponentially. There is growth in every aspect culturally, politically and economically. Living in the digitalized world, Mizoram is not secluded either, it is very much part of a global village. The growth in media allows Mizo people to explore the world from its living room. Fresh from twenty years of insurgency and decades later, the introduction of TV opened a whole new world to the Mizos. Cable TV introduces programmes and channels from different part of the world to one screen. Every channel is accessible with the tip of a finger. Skylinks first operate cable TV to the people of Mizoram since 1991 and a year later, LPS and ZOZAM began cable TV too limited subscribers (Lalruatkimi, 2015). People have adequate access to different channels like Star Plus, Star Movies, VH1 and one very significant channel is Arirang TV. Arirang TV immediately grabs the attention of youth. With that, Korean Wave blew into the living room of Mizo families. Tune into television and one can see Korean serials played in different channels dubbed into Mizo. Korean wave blew into Mizoram in the early millennial, it changes the way of life, it untapped market in media, people turn their attention to Korea, welcoming their culture, cuisine, clothes, language and even build relationship ties with the Government. People are hooked to Korean serials dubbed into Mizo. Teens crazed about the fashion style, hairstyle, music, dance and its cuisine, women find interests not only on the clothes or storyline but the interior design, relationship values, and tidiness. It touched and affects everyone, to some extent. As there are huge enamored women who watched soap operas daily, it is important to understand its influence on the audience. This paper examines the influence of Korean serials on Mizo women.
