Abstract

Indian society has always been solidly patriarchal. Women face a lot of restriction in their live both within the family as well as outside. Gender equality is not taught within the family. Boys are not taught to look at girls as equals. Women are seen as consumable products. This is made worse by the media. Especially the cinema also project the idea that men are born only to enjoy women, and women are created to serve men.  This kind of false notions creates violence against women in the society.  Nirbhaya Rape and murder case on 16th December 2012 is a window of deep seated social problem in India. During the Delhi Rape Case protests, the usage of social media was phenomenal. With the help of a dedicated group of software professionals create content and disseminate the issues in an effective manner.  

Social movements have been numerous in India. Some of the significant ones are Swadeshi movement, Sathyagraha, Save silent valley movement, Chipko movement, Namantar Andolan, Juncle bachao Andolan, Narmada Bhachao Andolan, Jan Lokpal Bill-Anti Corruption Movement and Nirbhaya Movement.
